Third hand smoke

Preschool seeks to establish a healthy environment to reduce the risk of passive smoke inhalation from Early Years staff who smoke, to children in their care.

Definition of third-hand smoke - “Residual contamination from tobacco smoke that remains after a cigarette is extinguished – toxic dust that settles onto surfaces and harmful volatile compounds that disperse in the air.” (ASH 2009)

  • Staff smoking prior to work should wear clothing over their uniform and remove this prior to working with the children or keep uniform in a bag until they have had their cigarette (not on Village Hall grounds) and put the clean uniform on before starting work

  • Hair should be tied back at all times

  • Hands need to be thoroughly washed using a sanitiser after smoking (to combat the smell of cigarettes) before working with the children

Disciplinary procedures will be followed if staff do not adhere to this policy.
