Third hand smoke
Preschool seeks to establish a healthy environment to reduce the risk of passive smoke inhalation from Early Years staff who smoke, to children in their care.
Definition of third-hand smoke - “Residual contamination from tobacco smoke that remains after a cigarette is extinguished – toxic dust that settles onto surfaces and harmful volatile compounds that disperse in the air.” (ASH 2009)
Staff smoking prior to work should wear clothing over their uniform and remove this prior to working with the children or keep uniform in a bag until they have had their cigarette (not on Village Hall grounds) and put the clean uniform on before starting work
Hair should be tied back at all times
Hands need to be thoroughly washed using a sanitiser after smoking (to combat the smell of cigarettes) before working with the children
Disciplinary procedures will be followed if staff do not adhere to this policy.
